Mysterious big cat: Serval or Savannah cat on the move in the Rostock district!
An unusual animal is currently moving around in the Rostock district and is causing a stir: a serval or a Savannah cat. This big cat, which resembles the appearance of a cheetah, has already been spotted several times, including in Schwaan. Frauke Parr, spokeswoman for the State Office for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology, confirmed the sightings, but the exact species cannot be determined based only on photos. The state office is therefore asking for information about further sightings in order to capture the animal and possibly bring it back into safe care, as its origin remains unclear. The big cat has been spotted in the district since May, lurking around a horse farm, among other places, where it was captured in a video that is already spreading among social media users.
The authority has already taken measures to track down the animal and has set up a live trap to be on the safe side. Animal rights activists, such as Manfred Poniatowski, chairman of the Schwaan animal protection association, actively support the authority and would like to help find the animal. They point out that servals and savannah cats generally do not pose any danger to humans, but you should not get too close to wild animals.
About the big cats
Servals, a type of big cat, are widespread in Africa south of the Sahara and are among the specially protected species. With a shoulder height of 45 to 65 cm, they are quite agile and can jump up to 3 meters high. The animals feed primarily on rodents, small reptiles and birds and are typically active at dusk. In captivity, servals need a lot of space, which is why species-appropriate keeping requires a minimum area of 50-100 square meters and high fences. In Germany in particular, keeping servals requires a permit and is subject to strict requirements that can vary depending on the federal state.
The Savannah cat, which is the result of a cross between a serval and a domestic cat, is enjoying growing popularity due to its special look. However, hybrids are expensive to purchase and animal rights activists criticize the keeping of these powerhouses because they do not belong in private care. There are currently five registered owners of servals in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but they are not missing their animals. The fate of the spotted animal therefore remains uncertain.
The State Office for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology is appealing to the public to report sightings of the animal. Those interested can do so by calling 038558864201 or by email at [email protected]. The Schwaan administration can also be reached: Telephone 0384484110, Email: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected].
Images or videos of sightings are particularly valuable as they help the authority better narrow down the type of animal and act accordingly.
Let's wait and see what happens next, because such exotic encounters are not seen every day in northern Germany. Hopefully the animal can be brought to safety soon.
