Enigmatic big cat: Serval or Savannah cat in the Rostock district!

An unusual animal is currently in the Rostock district and causes excitement: a serval or a Savannah cat. This big cat, which is reminiscent of the appearance of a cheetah, has already been spotted several times, including in Schwaan. Frauke Parr, spokeswoman for the State Office for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology, confirmed the sightings, but the exact species cannot be determined on the basis of photos. Therefore, the state office asks for further views to capture the animal and possibly bring back into safe care, since the origin has so far remained unclear. The big cat has been spotted in the district since May and, among other things, wraps a riding stable where it was recorded in a video that is already being used among the user: interior of social media.

The authority has already taken measures to track down the animal and has set up a living trap for safety. Animal rights activists, such as Manfred Poniatowski, chairman of the Schwaan animal welfare association, support the authority and want to help find the animal. They point out that servals and Savannah cats usually do not represent any dangers for humans, but you shouldn't approach wild animals too close.

about the big cats

servals, a kind of big cats, are common in Africa south of the Sahara and are among the species that are particularly protected. With a shoulder height of 45 to 65 cm, they are quite nimble because they can jump up to 3 meters. The animals feed primarily on rodents, small reptiles and birds and are typically dusk. Servals need a lot of space in captivity, which is why a species-appropriate attitude requires a minimum area of 50-100 square meters and high fences. Especially in Germany, the attitude of servals is subject to approval and is subject to strict requirements that can vary depending on the state.

The Savannah cat, which is created from a crossing of Serval and domestic cat, is enjoying growing popularity due to its special look. However, hybrids are expensive to buy, and animal rights activists criticize the keeping of these power packages because they do not belong in private care. Five registered owners of servals are currently known in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but their animals do not miss. Thus, the fate of the viewed animal remains uncertain.

The State Office for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology appeals to the population to report the animal's sightings. Interested parties can do this on 038558864201 or by email at [Email Protected]. The Schwaan administration can also be reached: phone 0384484110, email: [Email Protected], [Email Protected], [Email Protected].

Images or videos of sightings are particularly valuable because they help the authority to better narrow the type of animal and act accordingly.

we are eagerly waiting for what will happen next, because in northern Germany such exotic encounters cannot be seen every day. Hopefully the animal can be brought to safety soon.
