A worrying trend
The incidents in Dümmer and Ried are part of a worrying trend. According to the current police crime statistics, published on the website German Trade Association, the number of shoplifting cases rose to over 426,000 cases in 2023 - this corresponds to an alarming increase of more than 23 percent compared to the previous year. Particularly serious thefts organized by gangs increased by around 26 percent.
The trade association is therefore calling for more consistent criminal prosecution of such crimes and points out the high number of unreported cases, as many thefts are not reported.
