World Heritage Beech Forests: Natural Wonder of the Year nominated in MV!
An exciting election is coming up: Nature lovers can now vote for the “Natural Wonder of the Year”. Among the nine nominated natural locations, the UNESCO Serrahn beech forest in the Müritz National Park stands out. This impressive natural landscape, one of the oldest semi-natural deciduous forest areas in Germany, has developed over centuries without human influence and impresses with its native giant trees, including mighty copper beeches and centuries-old pine trees. The landscape is also enriched by tranquil lakes and moors, which provide habitat for countless species of plants, fungi and animals. This information is provided by the Northern Courier.
The Heinz Sielmann Foundation and the German Hiking Association are calling for an election that runs from today, August 11th, to September 28th, 2025. Anyone who would like to support the surrounding nature can cast their vote on the foundation's website. The highlight: The title winner will be announced on September 29th. In addition to the Serrahn-Buchenwald, other impressive locations are also in the running, including the Blautopf in Baden-Württemberg, the Breitachklamm in Bavaria and the Lange Anna in Schleswig-Holstein, to name just a few.
Diversity in the beech forests
The beech forests in Germany, especially the semi-natural old stands, make a significant contribution to biodiversity. It is estimated that they provide habitat for up to 10,000 different animal species. Given the rarity of old beech forests with trees over 200 years old, it is even more important that human intervention in these ecosystems is avoided. After all, the natural beech forests are not only ecologically valuable, but also a piece of cultural heritage EcoWoman reported.
The history of the beech goes back to the end of the Ice Age and it plays an important role in people's everyday lives. Words like “book” and “letter” could even have their origins in this tree species. With its spread after humans settled down, the beech is inextricably linked to our cultural landscape.
