In Neubrandenburg, the judiciary is the focus of attention due to a dramatic incident in Malchin. Four men, aged 24 to 42, will have to answer for attempted joint homicide and grievous bodily harm from Friday. Again Northern Courier Reportedly, the attacks occurred late in the evening on February 20th. The defendants allegedly suddenly struck two men, using both a baseball bat and their fists, even when the victims were already on the ground.
A 27-year-old defendant went so far as to deliver powerful blows to the 43-year-old victim's head. In a dramatic twist, the 37-year-old victim managed to drag himself to a nearby house where he called for help. In view of the support called in, the perpetrators let go of their other victim. It was clear to the defendants that hitting the head with a baseball bat could have life-threatening consequences.
Pretrial detention and reactions
The 26- and 27-year-old defendants have been in custody since the end of February and the beginning of March, respectively, while the arrest warrants against the two older men have been suspended. A total of eight negotiation dates are scheduled for the near future, which could last until mid-October.
A look across national borders shows that acts of violence in Germany are a serious problem. According to a report by Statista Violent crimes account for less than four percent of all crimes recorded by the police. Nevertheless, they have a significant impact on the population's sense of security. Around 217,000 violent crimes have already been registered in 2024 - the highest number since 2007. It is clear that the acts at the grassroots, like in Neubrandenburg, are part of a larger social problem.
