Dove of Peace for Neubrandenburg: City sends a signal of hope!
In Neubrandenburg, a city with deep-rooted history and a colorful cultural life, a working group made up of representatives from several city council factions recently came together. The aim is to send a strong signal for peace. A flag with the dove of peace should be hoisted here regularly NDR reported. The exact locations and occasions for raising this flag are still being planned and will be determined in the coming weeks.
The project comes against the background that some symbols of peace, such as the peace dove mosaics on the high-rise on Schwertstraße, have recently disappeared from the cityscape. These mosaics, which were designed by Lothar Weber in 1968, were dismantled in a campaign and, after being processed, will be reinstalled on a new building nearby. Each of these mosaics weighed between 250 and 270 kilograms and was 11 cm thick, according to the information in the Northern Courier.
A piece of the past and its meaning
Neubrandenburg has changed since the times of the GDR. In 1976, the city, known as the “City of Four Gates,” was heavily influenced by the ideals and political influences of socialist society. Prefab housing estates emerged, which served as a visible sign of the creation of affordable housing for the growing population. At that time, around 60,000 people lived in the city, which was increasingly becoming known as a cultural center in the north of the GDR. A modern cultural center, the “House of Culture and Education”, was considered a meeting place for education and entertainment, while the Tollensesee served as a popular excursion destination, describes coolis.de.
This historical context is of particular importance against the background of the current discussion about the flag with the dove of peace. The dove of peace not only stands for peace in the world, but also for a harmonious urban community - an understanding of values that should be reaffirmed again and again in Neubrandenburg. The city council is expected to decide on the proposal to hoist the peace symbol at the beginning of October, which is already arousing great interest among the population.
With the flag, Neubrandenburg would like to set a distinctive accent. The planned installation of signs with the dove of peace at the entrances to the city should also help to convey the message of peace and tolerance to the public.
It remains exciting to see how this project will develop and what response it will find among the population. Despite the changes and challenges of the past, does Neubrandenburg stand stronger for unity and peace?
