Legendary GDR train VT 18.16: Is it finally coming to Neubrandenburg?
In recent years, a very special project has emerged in the railway world: the restoration of the legendary VT 18.16, which was once a highlight on the railway tracks of the GDR. The “SVT Görlitz gGmbH” association has brought this jewel of the Deutsche Reichsbahn back to life with a lot of commitment and over 80,000 hours of voluntary work. Now everyone is hoping for the first trips, which are scheduled to start in September. It remains to be seen whether the train will ever come to Neubrandenburg. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that it will soon cross the picturesque landscape of the Mecklenburg Lakes, as nordkurier.de reports.
The ceremony to recommission the VT 18.16 in Halberstadt attracted around 200 guests, including members of the support association and numerous non-profit supporters. This event was not only a symbol of the return of a historic means of transport, but also a testament to the coming together of many volunteers and sponsors who pulled together. Mario Lieb, the boss of SVT Görlitz gGmbH, has expressed the hope that the train can be put into operation in the fourth quarter of the year - after a two-year delay. “A Train for Central Germany” cost a total budget of seven million euros, which was raised through donations and funding, as mdr.de reports.
A piece of history on rails
The VT 18.16 traveled between Berlin, Dresden, Prague and Vienna many years ago and thrilled not only German cities but also international travelers. His return promises not only nostalgic memories, but also real travel experiences with the original charm. The first trips from Dresden can currently be booked, including special trips over the Berlin outer ring. In the future, trips to Vienna and Copenhagen could even be planned, which makes the project even more exciting.
What is particularly impressive is that the train, which was parked in 2003, has been restored with great attention to detail. Work is currently still underway on the B power car, while the A power car can already run on its own engine power. According to those responsible, the new compressed air hoses for the brake system and the insertion of the window panes are what give the train the finishing touches. The Reichsbahn was a central institution in the GDR transport system - founded in 1945 and operator of many important routes.
The journey continues
For anyone interested in the journeys, SVT Görlitz will also offer the opportunity to charter the train. The daily rent is 7,500 euros, plus variable costs for operation, personnel and route costs. The club is in discussions with potential partners for ticket sales, but we ask that you refrain from making booking inquiries until all details about ticket sales are known.
The progress of the restoration and news about the VT 18.16 will be regularly announced on the association's website and its Facebook page. Another highlight will be the presentation of the train at the Heizhausfest in Chemnitz in August. So there is a lot going on in the world of traditional trains, and train fans can stay excited!
