Paavo Schewe: From canoeing to rowing – A man from Neubrandenburg on course for the World Cup!
Today is a very special day for the young athlete Paavo Schewe from Neubrandenburg. At just 19 years old, he decided to take a decisive step in his sporting career. Schewe was originally firmly rooted in canoe racing, but after a short while of thinking and some great advice from his coach at SC Neubrandenburg, he turned to rowing. His new coach, Karsten Timm in Rostock, was immediately impressed by Schewe's talent and was quickly able to win him over to rowing. Again Northern Courier reports, Schewe proves once again that changes in sport can also enable new heights.
Ready for the U23 World Cup
There is great anticipation for the U23 Rowing World Championships in Poznan, Poland, which will take place from July 23rd to 27th. This championship is an outstanding opportunity for young athletes. The U23 World Championships have been held by the World Rowing Association since 2005 and are the only junior class in the adult sector, as can be seen on Wikipedia can read. In this class, athletes who are not older than 22 years old in the current calendar year can fight for the title and at the same time take the opportunity to qualify for the open age group.
Schewe can already look back on some successes. Last year he took part in the European Canoe Championships in Bratislava and won two silver medals in the two and four at the German U23 Championships. These successes show that he not only has talent, but also the absolute will to prove himself in the new sport.
Intensive training and future plans
In order to optimally prepare for the World Championships, Paavo Schewe is training at the training camp at the Ratzeburg Rowing Academy. His focus is clearly on competitive sports, and his big dream is to take part in the Olympic Games. Despite the intensive training plans, he still has to take an oral Abitur exam in Neubrandenburg shortly before the World Cup. This is a testament to his discipline and willingness to combine sport and education.
After the World Cup, Schewe plans to move to Rostock and start studying technology. He certainly didn't make the decision to take this new direction lightly, but with role models like Max John, a member of the Germany eight, he has an excellent approach that will help him gain a foothold in rowing. These changes are not uncommon in sport and show how complex athletes' career paths can be.
The selection and preparation of the team members of the U23 national team of the German Rowing Association is an exciting matter. Only the best get through. Your success in the annual performance reviews will be crucial to being nominated in the various boat classes - from men's and women's sculls to the lightweight classes - such as the DRV information clarify.
On July 5, 2025, the time has finally come for Paavo Schewe: a new phase of life begins, which brings with it both ambitious goals and the opportunity to expand one's own boundaries in sport. We keep our fingers crossed for him and are excited to see what successes this new journey will bring!
