Silent in criticism: Billions disappear in uncontrolled spending frenzy!

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a current dispute over the use of funds is causing a stir. The state government under Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) is criticized for not adequately controlling financial resources. The MV protection fund, which has existed for five years and has a volume of 2.85 billion euros, was originally intended to help citizens, companies and associations affected by Corona. Nevertheless, critics say that the money is also used for other projects, such as the implementation of the Online Access Act and digitalization in schools and administrations. In this regard, FDP parliamentary group leader René Domke speaks of “heart projects” of the state government, while the State Audit Office describes the fund as a shadow budget.

At an investment summit that recently took place in Schwerin, the focus was on the distribution of 1.92 billion euros from a new special federal fund. The Taxpayers Association of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (BdSt MV) warns urgently against “uncontrolled spending mania”. The critical voices are becoming louder because there are no clear rules for the use of funds. Mummenhoff, managing director of the BdSt MV, emphasizes the need for a sustainable budget policy and more transparency in the use of funds.

Lack of control and worrying developments

An independent report from the German Taxpayer Institute easily highlights the lack of transparency and control. There is a fear that employees will implement questionable projects without critically questioning them. This could have fatal consequences for future generations, who would ultimately have to bear the financial burden.

Concern for balanced budget management, an essential element of budget discipline, is increasingly noticeable in the political landscape of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This discipline means consistent adherence to the budgetary principles of efficiency and thrift. It is particularly crucial that this discipline is monitored by independent institutions, such as the State Audit Office, to ensure that public money is used in the interests of the general public.

The call for reform

The Taxpayers' Association calls for a financial policy that aims at resilience, reliability and intergenerational fairness. However, there are currently no measurable goals or guidelines for the efficient use of funds. The handling of MV Protection Fund funds during the pandemic has brought back negative memories of poor fiscal discipline, and citizens are wondering whether this will continue in the future.

It remains to be hoped that the state government will take the calls for more transparency and strictly controlled spending seriously and adhere to the principles of budget discipline. This is the only way to restore the trust of citizens.
