Parchim celebrates its grand opening: New Goethe School sets standards!

On July 4, 2025, an important chapter in the educational landscape was opened in Parchim: The “Johann Wolfgang von Goethe” regional school had its ceremonial opening and is the largest construction project that the city has undertaken on its own in recent years. From the 2025/2026 school year, around 350 students will be taught here in 18 classes. The new building, which is located on a former military site, offers a modern learning environment with 16 classrooms and ten specialist rooms and is therefore a real ray of hope for the region.

The total investment for the project amounts to an impressive 26.9 million euros, of which over 14.1 million euros were made possible through funding. Construction work continued at full speed after the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on March 14, 2022 and the topping-out ceremony in March 2023. Mayor Dirk Flörke ceremoniously handed over the new premises to the school principal Peter-Michael Dreeser and recognized the achievements of everyone involved, who were always committed despite challenges such as COVID-19, the Ukrainian war and inflation.

Modern learning environment and digital learning

A highlight of the new building is the light-flooded atrium, which serves as a central location for school events. The entire building is equipped with digital boards, which is an important concern as part of the Digital Pact 2.0. The digital pact, which was approved by the federal and state governments in December 2024, aims to improve the digital infrastructure of schools and create a future-proof learning environment. At a time when digital skills are becoming increasingly important, it is essential for schools to introduce innovative teaching materials. The Federal Secretariat is investing a total of 6.5 billion euros in new devices and the expansion of network infrastructures to promote equal opportunities in education. More information about this can be found here: BMBF.

The color concept of the new building is based on Goethe's color wheel (red, orange, yellow), which gives the building a friendly and inviting character. The outdoor area is also attractively designed: In addition to tartan sports fields and play equipment, students can also relax in peace and quiet in green areas.

A center for education and inclusion

The new building will not only improve the educational infrastructure, but will also create space for inclusion. Barrier-free access, an elevator and tactile guidance systems ensure that all children have unrestricted access. The building fits harmoniously into the children's education center (KiBiZ), which is in the immediate vicinity of the adjacent daycare center.

In the coming years it is also planned to upgrade the old school building at Wallallee 1, which was built in 1890, to create space for a primary school, an after-school care center and a cafeteria. This means that the entire educational concept in Parchim will be sustainable and future-proof.
