Sad farewell: Gottschalk, Jauch and Schöneberger end the show round
On December 6, 2025, a chapter in German TV entertainment will end, as the popular presenters Barbara Schöneberger (51), Günther Jauch (69) and Thomas Gottschalk (75) say goodbye on the RTL game show “Because they don’t know what’s happening.” After seven years of extraordinary entertainment, during which the trio captivated audiences with their humor and spontaneity, the final program will be broadcast. RTL itself has not yet announced what will happen next with the show, but the next episode will follow on December 13th in a new constellation, while the proven show principle remains, as RTL program manager Inga Leschek emphasizes. The focus of the last episode will of course be Gottschalk, who, despite his serious cancer, is looking forward to the evening and plans to enjoy the show as a viewer. Nordkurier reports that RTL thanks the presenters for their many years of commitment.
The farewell has a particularly deep meaning for Gottschalk. At the beginning of July 2025, the popular presenter was diagnosed with epithelioid angiosarcoma, a rare and malignant tumor that arises from the cells of the blood vessels. Since then, Gottschalk has had to undergo surgery twice, with parts of the ureter and bladder being removed. “It was hell,” says his wife Karina, describing the stressful situation. Despite the enormous challenges, including the use of opiates, which caused confusion in public appearances, Gottschalk is not thinking of retiring (full information can be found at RTL.de).
An emotional farewell
In the last edition of the popular show, Gottschalk and his co-hosts will create an entertaining evening. The support of Schöneberger and Jauch is particularly emphasized during this difficult time, and viewers can look forward to an emotional farewell. RTL program director Inga Leschek has already announced that the farewell broadcast has been planned for a long time and that Gottschalk has the opportunity to enjoy the show without obligations. The recordings took place in an ambience filled with emotions, filled with both gratitude and melancholy.
Back in May, Gottschalk officially announced his withdrawal from Saturday night entertainment. Fans and viewers are looking forward to the final broadcast, which will be broadcast on December 6th at 8:15 p.m. According to media reports, this edition could also include a farewell to Jauch and Schöneberger, who have been shaping the show together with Gottschalk since 2018. The trio leaves a lasting impression and will be fondly remembered by the audience. The show will continue with a new cast on December 13th - the challenges will not be missed, promises RTL.
