Hollerbach has had its day: Who will be the new trainer at Standard Liège?

Rostock, Deutschland - The search for a new trainer for the Belgian Football Club Standard Liège takes exciting twists. After Bernd Hollerbach, former coach of Hansa Rostock, was on the list of possible successors for the migrated Ivan Leko, it has now turned out that Hollerbach is no longer considered for the position. According to the Ostsee-Zeitung this decision was made by those responsible for the club after the sports director Marc Wilmots followed other plans.

Hollerbach, who looks back at the age of 55, wanted to bring his entire team of coaches to Liège. However, this did not fit into the club's ideas. Before his time in Rostock, where he was released after a weak start to the season in October 2024, Hollerbach already had coaching stations at Royal Mouscron and VV St. Truiden in Belgium. In Rostock he implemented a point cut of 1.14 in 14 games, which was not sufficient for the club.

The favorite de Roeck

instead of Hollerbach, Jonas de Roeck is now traded as the main candidate for the coaching position at Standard Liège. The 45-year-old de Roeck made a name for himself due to his success at Antwerp and his interesting career. Wie die L’Avenir reports, but so far there has been no concrete negotiations, but its name has increasingly appeared in the Liège offices in the past few days.

de Roeck knows the league very well and also speaks French, which could be an advantage in communication with wilmots. Last season he led Royal Antwerp from the coaching bench before being released in early March. Nevertheless, the club must ensure that its future decisions also address fans, since the rumors about Felice Mazzù are also considered not very credible.

The situation with Standard Liège

Standard Liège is in a change in upheaval by changing from Ivan Leko to Kaa Gent. The official announcement on the new coaching occupation could soon be made, especially after the players return from vacation. The association is also in negotiations with Club Brugge about Casper Nielsen, who is open to a return to Liège. In addition, those responsible have reached an agreement with the French striker Thomas Henry, although modalities still have to be clarified with Hellas Verona.

The pressure on those responsible for Liège increases to make the right decisions. The ongoing uncertainty could have a negative impact on the preparations for the new season. The coming days could therefore be crucial for the future of the association and especially for the coaching question.
