Reading festival in Demmin: Students support elementary school students in a playful way!

An exciting project week recently took place in Demmin, which the primary school students at the Pestalozzi School particularly enjoyed. Students from the University of Rostock brought a breath of fresh air into the classroom with a lot of enthusiasm and organized a reading week that was primarily about making it easier for children to access reading in a playful way. Loud Uckermark courier 29 teacher training students from the fourth semester took part.

The event included students in grades 1 to 4 and offered a varied program that not only included reading lessons but also creative afternoon activities. Professor Dr. Wenke Mückel from the Institute for Primary School Education took the lead and enabled the children to train their reading skills and text comprehension through performance-differentiated reading lessons and exciting language games.

A wide range of offerings to promote reading

A highlight of the week was the competition on Friday in the Beermann Arena, in which the students had to work in teams to solve tasks that required both listening and logical thinking. Here the motivated children were able to collect reading points and have a lot of fun. Teacher Annette Fingerloos, who coordinated the project, highlighted the advantages of group work and emphasized that the children gave very positive feedback on the reading week.

The importance of promoting reading in primary school cannot be overestimated. Like on that Education Server impressively presented, there are numerous materials and approaches to support and improve reading skills. Teaching methods such as the “reading aloud tandem” or special reading texts for children with German as a second language are just a few examples of how to increase reading motivation.

Important insights into reading motivation

The topic of reading motivation was also discussed in the monograph “Reading Motivation in Primary Schools” by Richter, Plath and Goethe. The empirical findings presented therein illustrate how crucial the early promotion of reading skills is and that this can be significantly influenced by targeted didactic approaches. This shows how important projects like the one in Demmin are, which not only convey knowledge but also the joy of reading.

The city of Demmin not only supported the events organizationally, but also provided the students with free overnight stays in the Luisentor so that they could fully concentrate on the children. With such a committed approach, the foundations can be laid to introduce children to the world of books - and after all, this is the best investment for the future!
