Air quality in Rostock: Fine dust levels at Holbein-Platz alarming!
In Rostock today, November 30th, 2025, the air quality will be closely examined. At the measuring station at Holbein-Platz, the fine dust particles (PM10) are observed per cubic meter of air. The limit value for these particles is 50 particles per cubic meter, which can, however, be exceeded 35 times per year without having to take legal action. Such values are particularly important because they are directly linked to the health of citizens. According to the Baltic Sea newspaper Air quality in Rostock is an important issue, especially these days.
Air quality is measured using three values: particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ozone. The limit values for these substances are clearly defined. For nitrogen dioxide, a value above 200 μg/m³ indicates very poor air quality, while values of 101 to 200 μg/m³ are considered poor. Corresponding guidelines also apply to the other two measured values. In the best case, a measurement below 35 μg/m³ for fine dust and 121 μg/m³ for ozone predicts excellent air quality.
Health effects
A tragic 240,000 premature deaths occurred in the EU due to particulate matter - an alarming number that should make everyone sit up and take notice. If air quality is poor, it is recommended that sensitive people avoid physical exertion outdoors. If the quality is moderate, short-term health effects are unlikely, but long-term effects cannot be ruled out. It therefore always makes sense to pay attention to the current values and to switch to indoor activities if necessary.
With regard to the upcoming New Year's Eve celebrations, one must also exercise caution. New Year's Eve fireworks contribute significantly to fine dust pollution: an estimated 1,500 tons of fine dust are released on New Year's Eve, which corresponds to 75% of the annual release from fireworks. Although exposure to fireworks is not considered catastrophic compared to year-round air pollution, it remains a health risk, particularly for vulnerable groups.
What does this mean for Rostock?
The citizens of Rostock should therefore be aware of how the weather and other circumstances can influence air quality. Weather conditions play a crucial role in the distribution of fine dust. Especially on days with less wind, pollutants can concentrate more easily and worsen air quality.
Healthy air is of great importance for everyone. It is therefore worth following the recommended measures and minimizing possible health risks. The publication of data and recommendations on air values is crucial in order to raise awareness of this important issue and improve the quality of life in Rostock.
