Rostock pedals: Over 4,000 participants cycling around the city!

This year's city cycling caused a sensation in the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock. From June 15th to July 5th, 2025, a total of 4,232 cyclists came together, which corresponds to an increase of 9% compared to the previous year. An impressive 864,956 kilometers were covered - almost 20% more than in 2024. This shows that more and more people are discovering and using bicycles as a climate-friendly means of transport. Rostock town hall reports that recording kilometers via the city cycling app and in the online kilometer book not only documents the participants' commitment, but also creates valuable GPS data for analyzing cycling traffic.

The project coordinator Daniel Heinisch and the Senator for Urban Planning, Construction, Climate Protection and Mobility, Dr. Ute Fischer-Gäde, drew a consistently positive assessment of the event. During the action period, the participants formed teams by grouping together at least two people. In the category of the most active teams, the “Rearwind Crew” with only four members showed a remarkable performance and thus received a lot of recognition. On September 27, 2025, the winner will be chosen at a celebratory award ceremony on the Climate Action Day.

Bicycle friendliness and mobility

The city cycling campaign not only aims to cover as many everyday journeys as possible by bike, but also represents a contribution to climate protection. Every kilometer counts, especially if it would otherwise have been covered by car. This form of mobility is also considered in the context of the current bicycle climate test. This was supported by the ADFC and the Federal Ministry of Transport and examined bicycle-friendliness in Germany. The annual test, which surveyed around 213,000 citizens in 2024, found that the satisfaction of cyclists depends heavily on the cycling infrastructure and that many municipalities are on a positive path in this regard. RND highlights that over two thirds of cyclists feel unsafe on the roads, pointing to problems such as cycle paths that are too narrow.

Such a test encourages cities to do more for cyclists and thus improve the quality of life and environmental protection. Campaigns such as city cycling and positive reporting on progress in cycling infrastructure promote broader acceptance of environmentally friendly mobility. W-LR emphasizes that the Rostock district's participation in this campaign offers citizens the opportunity to actively participate in climate protection.
