Opening of the NordOstsee Gallery: Culture connects Cuxhaven and Sassnitz!

A bright day in Cuxhaven! On July 1, 2025, the ceremonial opening of the “NordOstsee Galerie” took place, which highlights the connection between the North and Baltic Seas. The outdoor exhibition was opened on the occasion of two anniversaries: 10 years of the Cuxhaven Wadden Sea Visitor Center and 35 years of the Jasmund National Park. Under the motto “Together by the Sea”, 20 large-format photo panels show exciting pairs of motifs that represent the cultural and scenic connections between these two unique regions. So the information from Cuxhaven.de.

At the symbolic ribbon cutting by Cuxhaven's Mayor Uwe Santjer and Sassnitz's Mayor Leon Kräusche, the importance of the cooperation between the Wadden Sea Visitor Center in Cuxhaven and the Königsstuhl National Park Center near Sassnitz was emphasized. In keeping with the spirit of the exhibition, the similarities and differences between the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea and the Jasmund National Park are discussed. The focus is on cliff coasts, the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and regional landmarks - a real experience for all visitors!

A look at the partnership between Cuxhaven and Sassnitz

The official opening of the partnership gallery on June 18, 2025 in the UNESCO World Heritage Site was a further step in the cooperation between the two coastal cities. Leon Kräusche, the mayor of Sassnitz, and Mark Ehlers, managing director of the National Park Center, emphasized the need for cultural and economic exchange. Sassnitz.de reports that issues of coastal and nature conservation as well as addressing common challenges were discussed in the speeches.

The partnership is intended to provide new impetus for future projects, such as in the area of sustainable urban and port development and the educational dialogue between the two national park centers. The second part of the exhibition will open in Sassnitz in summer 2025 - no one will be left out!

A natural world heritage that connects

Did you know that Germany has a total of 52 World Heritage sites, including beautiful natural specimens such as the Wadden Sea, together with Denmark and the Netherlands? BFN.de highlights that 227 of these sites fall under natural heritage protection and none of them are on the list of world heritage in danger. This illustrates the responsibility that lies on the shoulders of both the cities of Cuxhaven and Sassnitz.

The “NordOstsee Galerie” is not just an exhibition; it is a symbol of exchange, sharing knowledge and understanding about our natural treasures. The photo boards are free of charge and accessible around the clock until September 30, 2025 on the Dünenweg in Cuxhaven. Definitely worth a visit!
