Sailing yacht collides in Sassnitz: rescuers bring crew to safety!
In Sassnitz, in the beautiful district of Vorpommern-Rügen, a dramatic incident occurred on the water this morning. A sailing yacht coming from Świnoujście crashed into the bank fortifications west of the harbor entrance at around 11:28 a.m. and caused a stir among those present. The boat was badly damaged and was in danger of sinking when the alerted emergency services from the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People and the port authorities rushed to the rescue. Fortunately, the three people on board were uninjured, but the boat driver's breath alcohol test was found to be 1.9 per mille, which further complicates the situation.
The water police have started an investigation into the danger to shipping traffic in order to get to the bottom of the cause of the collision. This event is another cautionary reminder for all water sports enthusiasts, especially during the sailing season.
Sea rescue off Rügen
The engine of the two-master had broken down and the crew tried desperately to set sail for Rügen. The approximate position of the stricken ship was located two nautical miles north of Cape Arkona. Several ships, including the research vessel “Elisabeth Mann Borgese” and the Federal Police Maritime Operations Ship “Bamberg,” were immediately asked to look out for the stricken ship.
Rescue in the wind and storm
The sea rescue boat KURT HOFFMANN and the sea rescue cruiser HARRO KOEBKE quickly set course for the two-master and were finally able to reach it. The daughter boat NOTARIUS went alongside to defuse the threatening situation. The sea rescuers drained the water and cared for a young man who was suffering from seasickness and mild hypothermia. He was quickly transported to Glowe and handed over to an ambulance.
After the situation had been stabilized, the HARRO KOEBKE accompanied the two-master to around two nautical miles from Glowe before it was finally towed into the harbor by the sea rescue workers. The ship moored safely there at around 1:30 a.m. Thanks to the courageous efforts of the sea rescuers, something worse was prevented and the crew found refuge in a safe harbor.
These two incidents in a single day are a stark reminder that the sea brings not only beauty but also danger. It highlights the need to act responsibly in all aspects of water sports. A good hand in planning and preparation is essential to avoid unpleasant surprises. Whether it's a relaxing journey or a chaotic rescue operation - safety always has priority.
