Premiere of the Moorkatenoper”: murder, revenge and Low German passion!
An exciting cultural highlight took place last Saturday in the Schwerin-Mueß open-air museum. The musical “De Moorkatenoper” celebrated its eagerly awaited premiere here. This production is not just another piece of the North German theater landscape, but a true piece of cultural heritage that has its roots in the “Grattler Opera,” which premiered in 1978 at the Iberl-Bühne in Munich. Originally in High German, the opera has found its place on Low German stages in recent decades, especially at Hamburg's Ohnsorg Theater, where it was a huge success. Over 500 sold-out performances at the Bavarian Volkstheater speak clearly about the popularity of this performance. According to the Nordkurier, the premiere found its way back to the open-air museum and thus offers a great experience in a historical ambience.
“De Moorkatenoper” takes place in the threatening atmosphere of the Niemöller family's kitchen, where the tragedy begins: Hans, the family's son, is found dead while poaching. The official version of his death as an accident cannot convince the resolute Maleen Niemöller. Instead of submitting to the flimsy explanations of the forest manager and the game dealer, she decides to fight for justice on her own. Together with the cheerful tramp Paschinski, her brother's best friend, she ventures into an adventure that not only turns her own life upside down, but also that of her entire family. This exciting plot, which revolves around themes such as revenge and truth, is impressively brought to the stage under the direction of Dirk Audehm.
A musical masterpiece
The music, a mix of swing, klezmer, jazz and pop balladry, guides the audience through the emotional roller coaster ride of the performance. With his musical arrangement, Martin Schelhaas ensures that the audience can experience not only the dramatic but also the humorous facets of the story up close. The costumes, designed by Christine Jacob, transport the audience directly into life in the 1950s and give the performance a special authenticity.
It is also pleasing for visitors to know that there will be several more performances. In the coming days, especially on June 22nd and 26th to 29th as well as in July, there will be an opportunity to immerse yourself in this exciting story. Tickets are available via the central ticket telephone on 0385 53 00-123. Advance sales at the M*Halle start a month before the first performances and offer wide availability for all theater fans.
