Renovation of the Stralsund Rügendamm train station: New life for the monument!
There's a lot going on at the Rügendamm train station in Stralsund! The renovation of the former reception building, which has been in operation since 1936, is taking shape and promises to change the dreary image of an eyesore in the city. Hands-on work is carried out here for an estimated one million euros. As the Baltic Sea newspaper reported, new dormer windows and a renewed building structure are already part of the current construction progress. The rooms will be furnished in keeping with the historic buildings with new doors and windows that do justice to the historic charm of the building.
The components that have already been installed lay the foundation for the next steps, including the roof covering and the rough installation of the electrical supply. An exciting challenge that the construction company tackles with great sensitivity during the renovation. Matthias Gabel, Managing Director of Multibau Preetz GmbH, has a tight time window here, as the work began in November 2022 and should ideally be completed during 2026.
A new home for vacationers and travelers
The goal of the comprehensive remodeling is to create a modern apartment building with 29 one- and two-room apartments. These are intended not only to attract short vacationers and day tourists, but also to support people in emergency situations or business travelers in finding accommodation. A dining room, a small restaurant and digital check-in options increase the comfort for guests. The former train station, which was hit by several fires between 2014 and 2016 and whose roof was severely damaged, is being brought back to life, despite the challenges that monument protection brings with it.
The upgrading of the Rügendamm train station must also be seen in the context of urban development. After all, the train station is one of two in Stralsund and is a listed building. This makes renovation projects like this particularly valuable. In addition to taking into account the listed external walls, the interior spaces have to be almost completely redesigned, which requires both experience and creative ideas.
Promotion on a broad front
The renovation project has also attracted interest from institutions. The German Monument Protection Foundation supports up to 600 projects across Germany every year and supports the preservation of historical buildings like this one. The foundation's mission is to restore monuments to their former glory and supports them with an annual budget of around 20 million euros.
This initiative supports the vision of building Rügendamm station not just as a simple residential building, but as a lively place that will benefit both tourists and locals. The workforce employed to carry out the project not only represents a financial aspect, but also supports the local economy.
Matthias Gabel and his team have a good knack for designing this bright new beginning in the heart of Stralsund and transforming the old train station into a modern and comfortable home for many. There is great anticipation and the next few months will show whether the ambitious project is going exactly according to plan.
