Christmas tree sales start: support local and give joy!
The most wonderful time of the year begins on the 1st of Advent – the Christmas tree season. How NDR reports, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Forest is starting sales at the Nossentiner Heide forestry office, a special place that is immersed in a festive atmosphere at a Christmas market in the Damerow bison reserve. Here visitors can look forward to a large selection of regional Christmas trees.
Around 13,000 Christmas trees are sold every year on a cultivated area of around 65 hectares. This year the prices are within the usual range: for Nordmann firs between 1.5 and 2 meters you pay between 35 and 50 euros. This continues to make the Nordmann fir the most popular tree species in Germany, accounting for over two thirds of all sales. Blue spruces, Norway spruces and pines are also enjoying increasing popularity.
Christmas tree sales on your doorstep
Consumers can play an active role in deciding where they buy their Christmas tree: the best prices are usually available straight from the farm. They also support the local economy. Environment Minister Till Backhaus expressly recommends relying on regional trees, as they are not only more beautiful but also more environmentally friendly.
Christmas tree production is an important industry in Germany. Around 30 million trees are sold every year, 90 percent of which come from regional production. The northern German forests not only create a festive atmosphere, but also contribute to CO2 binding - 50 planted trees can bind around 1.5 tons of CO2 and produce one ton of oxygen.
There are special offers especially for families, such as on December 23rd at the Grevesmühlen Forestry Office. Here, visitors can choose and cut larger Nordmann firs themselves between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Accompanied by an ecumenical trombone choir playing the traditional “Christmas tree blowing”, this will be an unforgettable experience in nature. If you like, you can prepare the delicacies you brought with you over the fire - what a wonderful way to celebrate the anticipation of Christmas!
The diversity of Christmas tree species
Speaking of diversity: The most popular conifers are not only the Nordmann fir, but also noble firs and spruces. According to the information from My farm Nordmann firs make up 71 percent of sales. Blue spruces follow with 15 percent, while spruces, as a cost-effective alternative, only reach 7 percent. Anyone who chooses a Nobili fir is making a good choice because it stays fresh until the Epiphany.
The growing process for Christmas trees is complex: it takes around 8 to 10 years from the seed to the tree ready for sale. This has a lot to do with care, which begins after just three years, and requires a lot of man-hours per hectare. When harvest time comes in late November to early December, the freshness of the tree is evident at the cut on the trunk.
Don't miss the opportunity! A beautiful Christmas tree, which traditionally belongs to every family, is part of this special time. The cozy atmosphere, perhaps with a cup of mulled wine, makes the experience even more magical. Grab it and bring the Christmas season into your home!
