Traffic calm at the end of the holidays: There were no traffic jams in Schleswig-Holstein

The summer holidays in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are over, and you can tell that on the streets. But contrary to the ADAC's forecasts, the feared gridlock on the motorways did not materialize. How NDR reported, the main axes A1, A7 and A23 remained largely free of traffic jams, although some delays were recorded.

The ADAC predicted a lot of traffic, especially on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, and in fact there were isolated traffic delays. There were some bottlenecks on the A1 and A7, especially around the Elbtunnel and on the diversions due to construction sites between Owschlag and Schleswig/Schuby. The Hamburg traffic center, however, reported normal traffic volumes.

Construction sites and speed limits

A speed limit of 60 km/h was introduced in Hamburg due to maintenance work on the Norderel Bridge. The Köhlbrand Bridge was even completely closed at the weekend. There was also a traffic jam of around eight kilometers on the A1 in the direction of Bremen on Friday due to rescue work after an accident.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, travelers had to endure long waiting times at the bridges to Usedom, where the Peene Bridge and the Zecheriner Bridge in particular were very busy. Also on the A24 between Wittenburg and Zarrentin the speed limit was 60 for 13 kilometers due to the need for concrete maintenance. The surface will finally be renewed there in mid-September.

Tips for the traveling public

For the coming weeks, the ADAC has issued a recommendation to travel during off-peak times, i.e. early in the morning or late in the evening, in order to avoid traffic jams. You should remember this before your next road trip! Construction work and diversions will be partially completed after the end of the holidays in Hamburg, which could bring fresh air for traffic.

Another topic at the weekend was Norla, the largest agricultural trade fair in the north, which recently ended after 75 editions and attracted long streams of visitors. Another event that affected the traffic situation was the discovery of an aerial bomb, as a result of which around 2,000 people had to leave their homes and traffic was rerouted on the Kiel-Plön route.

In summary, it can be said that the end of the holiday in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was accompanied by increased traffic volumes, but balanced driving behavior and timely advice about road conditions ensured that there were no serious traffic jams.
