Sugar beet boom in Western Pomerania: harvest yields over 90 tons per hectare!

The sugar beet campaign is currently being tackled properly in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The beets thrive on 28,000 hectares of arable land and make the farmers happy. Trantower Agrar GmbH reports a satisfactory harvest, which is considered very good with a yield of 80 to 90 tons per hectare. In addition, the sugar content of beets is up to 18 percent. This all sounds like a successful year for sugar production, doesn't it? During the campaign, more than 14,000 tons of beets will be processed daily in the sugar factory in Anklam, supplied by a total of 311 farms in the region.

NDR reports that the areas for growing sugar beets have tended to decrease in recent years, which is mainly due to an overproduction of sugar on the world market.

The situation on the market

But what is the overall situation with sugar beet production in Germany? Due to extensive market developments, sugar production of around 4.4 million tons of beet sugar is forecast for the 2025/26 campaign. This corresponds to a decrease of almost 240,000 tons or 5 percent compared to the previous year. The last time so few sugar beets were planted was in 2020. Interestingly, the beet area decreased by 10 percent compared to the 2024 harvest and is now around 350,000 hectares.

The forecast for beet yields might seem sobering at first glance: we are talking about 82.6 tons per hectare, which is less than last year, but above the average of 78.5 tons per hectare over the last five years. There is also good news regarding the sugar content, which is expected to rise from 16.3 percent to 17.2 percent year-on-year. This all comes from the estimates of Agricultural today.

Beet yields at a glance

A look at beet yields shows the following: Yields per hectare of cultivated area have been subject to constant fluctuation in recent years. Loud Statista The income was continuously documented in the period from 2009/10 to 2024/25. The data shows that despite the climatic challenges and market conditions, sugar beets still represent an important commodity for agriculture in Germany.

The current campaign in Anklam and the situation on the sugar market are an exciting topic that shows us not only the challenges but also the opportunities of our domestic agricultural sector. It remains to be hoped that the coming years will bring even more stable development in sugar beet cultivation.
