467,000 kilometers for climate protection: record for city cycling in 2025!

A truly impressive result was achieved at this year's city cycling in the Aurich district. More than 2,400 enthusiastic cyclists covered over 467,000 kilometers, working together to protect the climate. With over 600 more participants compared to the previous year, it shows that the campaign is becoming increasingly important, as nwzonline.de reports.

At the award ceremony in a very short time by building department head Eiko Ahten and climate manager Ingo de Vries, all teams were warmly thanked for their commitment. This great initiative would have emitted around 77 tonnes of CO₂, taking car journeys into account. An enormous contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions has been made here!

The winners of the city cycling 2025

The best teams were chosen in various categories:

  • Unternehmen: Sparkasse Aurich-Norden – 54.939 km (217 Teilnehmende)
  • Schulen: IGS Ihlow – 10.336 km (65 Teilnehmende)
  • Nachwuchs: Tiddeltopp Wiesmoor – 6.487 km (84 Teilnehmende)
  • Vereine/Verbände: KBV Good wat mit – 4.766 km (35 Teilnehmende)

Second place went to, among others, Raiffeisen-Volksbank eG and Dietrichsfelder Kindergarten Sandhasen e.V. Sparkasse Aurich-Norden was able to beat its previous year's record, making it the company with the most cycling in East Frisia.

A project close to the heart with appreciation

As a special gesture, the Sparkasse donated 10,000 euros to 20 clubs, based on the distance traveled by the teams. This shows how important the issue of climate protection is in the region and how it can also be used to support local initiatives.

A quick look back: In 2024, 688 cyclists took part in city cycling and covered 146,871 kilometers. This led to a CO₂ saving of 24,000 kg.The next city cycling is planned for May 2026.

City cycling is more than just an event; It is a community concern and shows that the residents of the Aurich district strongly identify with climate protection. The broad participation and tireless commitment are a clear sign. Who knows how many kilometers there will be in the next few years!
