The Christmas trail in Ihlow: Historical dioramas enchant from Advent onwards!

This coming first Advent, a very special event will return to the Ihlow monastery: the historic “Christmas Trail” will be presented with 18 artfully restored dioramas depicting the childhood and youth of Jesus. The scenes range from Mary and Joseph in front of the manger to the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. Originally exhibited in the Bijbels Museum Amsterdam, the dioramas found their forgotten existence many years ago in an old barn nearby. Heinke Peters, a trained carpenter, breathed new life into them and restored them in his workshop. Klaus Albers ensured the right light play by installing modern LED lighting that gave the figures a special shine. Visitors can experience these wonderful insights in the “Room of Search for Traces” in the Ihlow monastery NWZonline reported.

The Ihlow monastery, a place of history and peace with roots dating back to 1228, was once an important Cistercian monastery. The monastery church, once the largest place of worship between Bremen and Groningen, is now honored in the form of a replica, the “Imagination”, made of steel and wood. Man-high brick pillars and ivy-covered walls are reminiscent of the venerable nave, while the bell tower, almost 45 meters high, is a real eye-catcher. The “Room of the Search for Traces” and the monastery garden, which shows medieval plants and herbs, provide further refreshing discoveries in the monastery site, such as Total local turns out.

The Lüchtermarkt and festive activities

The upcoming Lüchtermarkt on November 29th and 30th not only invites you to stroll, but also makes the hearts of visitors beat faster. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., guests can look forward to a 900-meter-long walk through the forest decorated with poems, lanterns and stars. For less mobile visitors, the “Monastery Mobile” and electric carriages are available. The market offers handicrafts and culinary offerings, including the popular monastery bread and the “Ihlow nativity scene”. Tours of the monastery take place at 3:30 p.m., and Santa Claus will make children's eyes shine at 4:15 p.m.

During the Advent devotions on Saturdays at 6 p.m. and Sundays, visitors can experience a contemplative atmosphere. A concert by the IGS Aurich “Hearts Choir” will round off the festive setting following the service. The Christmas Trail will remain open to interested visitors until February 1st, Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., although individual appointments for school groups can also be arranged.

The Ihlow monastery is not only a place of reflection and history, but also an excellent starting point for holidays in East Frisia. The monastery café in the restored forester's lodge pampers guests with East Frisian tea and homemade cakes, while the monastery shop offers monastic products and regional handicrafts. The guesthouse “Am Ihler Meer” provides overnight accommodation, providing inexpensive accommodation for families, pilgrims and cyclists.
