Großfehn in turmoil: Fire in warehouse requires 160 firefighters!

In the early morning of September 16, 2025, there was a devastating fire in a warehouse in the Aurich district, more precisely in the municipality of Großefehn. Shortly after midnight, the fire broke out in a hall of a farm where equipment, straw bales and grain were stored. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the fire brigade, the fire was extinguished, but the material damage was significant. Reports the Borkener Zeitung, the damage is estimated at more than 100,000 euros.

Around 160 emergency services from Großefehn, the Leer district, Wiesmoor and Aurich were in alarm mode. The cause of the fire is still unclear and police have begun an investigation. Fortunately, there were no injuries, neither among the firefighters nor among the animals in the stables. As NDR reports, the hall was so hot during the possible fire that there was even a risk of collapse. An excavator was used to secure the statics.

Emergency services mastered major challenges

The extinguishing work was difficult. The flames threatened to spread to an adjacent stable building, which made it necessary to alert additional fire departments. Special companies with crawler excavators were called in to ensure the fire was quickly contained. The emergency services had to stay under control for several hours, so that the extinguishing work continued until the early hours of the morning.

In the warehouse, not only the straw and hay bales, but also a tractor and other equipment were completely destroyed. These materials, experts point out, are particularly flammable and should be stored under strict safety precautions. The fire protection center highlights that straw and hay are highly combustible materials. Safe distances from power lines and other dangerous areas are essential.

In order to prevent the risk of spontaneous combustion of hay and straw, they must always be stored in a dry place and regular temperature checks must be carried out in the storage rooms. There is an acute danger at temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius. In this case, stricter management of storage conditions may have prevented a fire like this.

The incident in Großefehn is a powerful wake-up call about how important fire protection measures are in agricultural businesses. The fire department and police remain on the ball to clarify the causes, while the residents of the district have to deal with the dramatic remains of the fire.
