Blood donations in Lower Saxony: Numbers of first-time donors cause alarm!

Today, World Blood Donor Day on June 14, 2025, there is a mixed picture in Lower Saxony when it comes to willingness to donate blood. With a slight decline in first-time donors from 9 to 8 percent, those responsible are concerned about the trend that can be observed across Germany. Felix Roeren from the Lower Saxony Blood Donation Service particularly appeals to young people to take an active part in blood donation, as clinics need up to 2,300 blood donations every day to meet the demand. Despite a slight increase in general willingness to donate in Lower Saxony last year, the decline in first-time donors is an alarming sign that should not be ignored. [NDR reports that politicians, aid organizations and doctors are calling for people to donate blood for the 21st time](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/niedersachsen/Weltblutspendetag- Zahl-der-Erstspender-sinkt-in-Niedersachsen,blutspenden154.html).

However, there is good news from Bremen, where the blood supply has stabilized. In the first four months of the year there were almost 7,000 donors there, and there is also a positive picture in Lower Saxony with around 230,000 donors. Still, concerns remain about the decline in first-time donors. The German Red Cross (DRK) emphasizes that every generation needs its blood donors to ensure a continuous supply. Buten un Binnen reports that the willingness to donate fell sharply in the winter due to a wave of colds, but the current situation appears to be stable.

Blood donation day activities

As far as the organizational processes are concerned, both the doctors and the DRK are available to inform the population about the importance of blood donation and to motivate them to do so. Finally, there are still some shortages that have occurred in the past and a steady number of blood donors is urgently needed. The blood donation service's studies illustrate how important these campaigns are, as every donor counts.

It remains to be hoped that the call for blood donations will have a greater impact in the coming weeks and months. Every healthy, adult person has the opportunity to donate blood - men can donate up to six times and women up to four times in twelve months. Given the current challenges, we must take action together.
