700 children learn the value of water in the OUR WATER” project!

The exciting educational project “OUR WATER” by the Weddel-Lehre Water Association (WWL) took place from May 6th to June 12th, 2025, which introduced more than 700 participants to the world of water purification and nature conservation. Over 679 children from 16 primary schools in the Braunschweig-Wolfsburg region took part, supported by 67 teachers and accompanying persons. How cremlingen-online.de reported, the aim of the project was to clearly convey the wastewater treatment processes in the association's own sewage treatment plant in Lehr/Wendhausen. The children not only learned the technical aspects, but also the value of water for all living things.

The accompanying activities were diverse. The children were allowed to net in the Schunter for insect larvae, fish, snails, water beetles and even water scorpions in order to determine the quality of the water. This practical approach made it easier to understand the natural water cycle and the goal of returning only well-purified water geopark-hblo.de leads.

Insights into the water world

On the first day of the project, the basics of the water cycle and wastewater treatment were explained to the children. A tour of the sewage treatment plant by WWL employees gave the students interesting insights into the complex water treatment processes. The educational content was prepared in a child-friendly manner and enabled the students to actively engage with the topic of water.

The project has been carried out in primary schools in the WWL association area since 2014 and is very popular. The positive response from the participants was also a positive sign for WWL managing director Ralf Johannes and WWL project manager Sabine Walz. This feedback strengthens plans to increase the number of participants to up to 1,000 primary school children by 2030. In order to realize this, we are now looking for further funding partners.

Sustainability and environmental awareness

The excellent collaboration with the Lower Saxony BINGO Environmental Foundation and the generous donation from the Edeka Bartsch market for healthy break meals have additionally supported the project and show how important local partnerships are for the implementation of environmental projects. In addition to the adventure in nature, awareness of the need for sustainable use of water and bodies of water was also promoted, which is of enormous importance in today's world.

Environmental projects like “OUR WATER” are not only educational, but also an important step towards raising awareness among young generations about topics close to nature. Actions like these help children develop a sense of the importance of water and understand what it means to take responsibility for our environment. In this way, our education system makes a valuable contribution to climate protection, as does the Teacher page clarified. Projects in schools ensure that the next generations are aware of sustainable practices and can actively contribute to improving our environment.
