First Christian art library opened in Braunschweig – art to borrow!

A new chapter in art and religious culture has opened in Braunschweig: art enthusiasts can now borrow Christian works from the 70s and 80s at a special facility in the Theological Center. As ndr.de reports, it is the first Christian artothek in Germany, taking an innovative step in the communication of art and faith.

The collection that visitors can now admire is characterized by its diversity. It includes impressive images with Christian motifs, etchings, unique carving techniques and oil paintings. The works all come from the circle of friends for paramentics and Christian art that was formerly active in Helmstedt. Here, both international artists and local talent have come together to present the rich palette of Christian art.

A look at the artists

What is particularly outstanding is the fact that the famous artist Salvador Dalí is represented in the collection with the lithographic print “The Price-Bereavement”. You can also find works by Klaus Staeck, who became known for his poster art, and Joseph Beuys, who sets impressive accents with his felt art.

The regional artists featured in the Artothek also contribute to the inviting and diverse collection. Gerd Winner, Christiane Brennecke and Rüdiger Stanko are just some of the artists whose works will certainly increase interest in Christian art.

Interest in faith and aesthetics

The director of the Artothek, Kerstin Vogt, aims to promote the dialogue between faith and aesthetics with this facility. This is particularly important in times when the connection between faith and art is often forgotten. In this context, the Artothek is not only a place for art lovers, but also a space for encounters and exchange.

The rental fee for the works is ten euros for a period of three months, although the loan can be extended. This makes participation in this cultural offer accessible to many. Anyone who is still unsure about the meaning of Christian art should know that it is rooted in Christianity and comes in a variety of forms - from Christian seafaring to Christian baptism to Christian charity. It is an art rich in history and tradition that deserves to be discovered.

The opening of the Artothek in Braunschweig is a strong sign of a lively and inclusive cultural landscape in which dialogue about art and faith is promoted and new paths are broken.
