Cyclists in Braunschweig's Kastanienallee: Only on the street!
Something is happening in Kastanienallee in Braunschweig: From now on, cyclists are only allowed to use the street. This decision was made by a responsible committee and marks a significant change for cyclists in the region. News38 reports that this regulation applies to the section between Altewiekring and Herzogin-Elisabeth-Straße. The reasons for this change are diverse and caused lively discussions in the city.
Until now, cyclists had the opportunity to choose between a narrow cycle path and the road. But there were always conflicts between cyclists, pedestrians and drivers. Reports of dangerous traffic situations documented by police and concerned citizens have increased in recent years. The existing cycle path, which was only 90 cm wide, no longer met current requirements - a circumstance that only exacerbated the problems.
New regulations come into force
There were first rumors about changes to traffic rules in August 2024, but these were not confirmed until the end of last year. In a vote with 9 votes in favor and exactly one against, the Committee for Mobility, Civil Engineering and Procurement decided to only allow cyclists to ride on the road in the future. The previously existing cycle path is now signposted as a footpath and cycling on the sidewalks remains permitted for children up to the age of ten, but only at walking speed.
The new rules were implemented in mid-July 2023 and were made visible through appropriate signs and pictograms placed after junctions. These measures are intended to help make cycling safer and more visible to ensure better integration into the city's overall traffic. RegionalToday emphasizes that no comprehensive renovation was planned - so the trees and parking stands will be retained.
Divided opinions among the population
Views on this regulation vary. In a Facebook group, citizens express different opinions about the changes. Some shop owners are disappointed, while others support the need for greater safety and order in urban transport. Overall, it can be said that despite careful consideration of this measure, no serious accident has been recorded on Kastanienallee in recent years.
Overall, the new traffic regulations should benefit not only cyclists, but all road users. Police will continue to monitor the situation, particularly given the increase in e-bikes and cargo bikes that have changed the dynamics on the roads. Where movement and safety should go hand in hand, it will be exciting to see how the new conditions in Kastanienallee will develop.
