New professor in Braunschweig: Shaping learning of the future!

There is exciting news in Germany's academic landscape! The Technical University of Braunschweig has welcomed Professor Julia Waldeyer, a new junior professor at the Institute for Educational Psychology. Their specialist knowledge and innovative approaches promise to bring a breath of fresh air into research. As TU Braunschweig reports, the focus of their work is on efficient, conscious and future-oriented teaching and learning methods.

Waldeyer is particularly interested in how learners can manage resources to maximize their learning success. This includes time management and optimal effort when learning. In addition, she deals intensively with promoting metacognitive judgment accuracy, i.e. the precise self-assessment of one's own knowledge. This is particularly important in order to control learning individually and to be able to better assess success.

Current research topics

In her current projects, Waldeyer is stepping into the spotlight with several innovative approaches. She examines the accuracy of judgment of one's own knowledge as well as peer assessment in various learning contexts. A particularly exciting BMBF-funded joint project aims to support school authorities in creating an Open Educational Resources (OER)-friendly infrastructure. From 2026, this approach will be partially continued at TU Braunschweig.

In addition, Waldeyer plans to integrate digitalization and augmented realities into the development of effective didactic concepts. She developed her thematic focus through her master's degree, her work as a student assistant and her doctorate in teaching-learning psychology. She describes her everyday work with the succinct keywords: innovate, exchange, create - and of course inspire.

Metacognition in the learning process

A central component of Waldeyer's work are metacognitive learning strategies. These strategies help learners to actively control and plan their learning process. From formulating learning goals to monitoring learning progress: a clear structure is essential for learning success. Toolbox summarizes how important it is to ask the right questions: “What goal do I want to achieve?” or “How can I achieve this goal?”

The students not only learn what they learn, but also how they can learn most effectively. This self-regulation of the learning process requires both cognitive and metacognitive skills, which Waldeyer specifically promotes.

Technological support

Another aspect of modern teaching is the use of digital technologies. In this context, Microsoft 365 plays a big role, especially with the new Copilot app, which integrates a range of applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. With the help of these AI-supported functions, users can increase their productivity and design learning materials more efficiently. This could be an interesting tool for the teaching and learning processes that Waldeyer is aiming for. The Microsoft 365 platform offers numerous options for creating content, from images to surveys to presentations.

With Professor Waldeyer at the helm, the TU Braunschweig will certainly provide exciting impulses for the future of learning. Their interdisciplinary approach could enrich not only the university, but also the educational landscape as a whole.
