Celler SPD requires clear improvements for rail connection and punctuality

What's in Celle? The discussion about the rail connection in the district seems to be anything but an end. On June 27, 2025, the route comparison for the Hamburg - Hanover railway line was presented by the infrastructure company of the Deutsche Bahn. This debate has been going on for many years and goes back to 1992 when the so-called "Y-Trasse" came into play for the first time. A lot has happened since then, but the Celler SPD is dissatisfied with the current state of planning and demands more transparency when it comes to connecting rail connections, as reports the Celler Presse.

The train itself favors a new line that is supposed to lead along the A7 and B3. In order to further concretize these plans, the members of the Celler SPD met with Bjarne Reitz from the Germany Verkehrsclub (VCD) last week and found clear words: the status quo is inadequate, and the need for construction measures for a functioning rail connection is out of the question. Maximilian Schmidt, the chairman of the SPD in the district of Celle, sees an urgent need for action so that the metronome, currently one of the most unpunctual local trains in Lower Saxony, gets his delays under control.

construction projects and future visions

As part of the planning, there is already an announcement that a quality initiative for the Hamburg-Hannover route should be launched by 2026. Here, a general renovation of the route for 2029 is announced. Yannis Naumann, member of the Celler SPD sub-district board, vehemently pleads for capacity growth and wants the municipalities concerned to actively be involved in discussions about the route and train stations.

The “Dialog Process Schiene Nord”, which was started in 2015, was also worth mentioning and discussed alternative route options for the original Y-route concept. This was not only about the variants offered by Deutsche Bahn, but also about suggestions that were brought in by various actors and environmental associations. These included, for example, the VCD variant and the alpha variant, which suggested a reduced existence expansion.

A look at Deutsche Bahn

In addition, Deutsche Bahn AG has launched a comprehensive renovation program that is scheduled to run by 2027. The focus is on the renovation of the infrastructure, railway operation and economy. The aim is to restore the performance of the railways and to significantly improve the customer experience. The CEO Richard Lutz explains that there is an urgent need for action due to the poor condition of the infrastructure and external crises. This also includes the goal of reducing the infrastructure -related delays by 20 percent by 2027.

In view of these developments that affect the political landscape, the question arises whether the Celler SPD and the citizens in the region receive the necessary support and clear guidelines in order to enforce their needs in the public transport area. The discussion is in full swing and time is for specific decisions. Citizens can only hope that something will finally move and the rail connection will be improved in such a way that everyone can benefit from a more punctual and reliable connection.
