Prices are exploding: consumers complain about rising costs of living!

What is happening in our region? The rising cost of living is currently causing problems for many households. On June 19, 2025, the drastic price increase for electricity and fuel will cause unrest among companies and consumers. This situation is causing many to take a close look at their monthly expenses, as the prices of essential goods, especially due to the increase in food, are putting a significant strain on budgets.

Recent reports show that electric energy has become more expensive by around 4.8%, which has had a huge impact since May 10th. Even small businesses are affected: for example, entrepreneur Mme Le Thi Bao Trang has seen her electricity costs increase from VND 4 to 6 million, and her total monthly energy costs now amount to VND 17 million. The high costs require consumers to use their money wisely more than ever. And so it's not surprising that some households are starting to reduce spending on leisure and other non-essential areas.

Price development for food

What is particularly notable is the increase in food prices that has been observed since the beginning of May. Mme Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang reported that vegetable prices increased by about 30% compared to the previous month. The price ranges are significant: for chops, buyers currently have to budget between 180,000 and 200,000 VND per kilo, while the briskets are around 150,000 VND. Prices for many vegetables are also now 12,000 VND for pumpkins and 20,000 to 25,000 VND for tomatoes.

Such price increases are causing many people to rethink their purchasing habits. Instead of eating out, many people prefer to cook at home to save money. Restaurateurs are already feeling the impact as many of them have had to increase their prices by VND5,000 to VND10,000 per dish.

Income under pressure

According to Destatis, households with lower incomes are particularly affected by these changes. While the poorest groups spend 32% of their spending on housing costs, the figure for wealthier households is only around 17%. These inequalities are further exacerbated by the rising cost of living, meaning poorer households struggle to build up savings.

Additionally, a survey shows that 26% of Canadians are unable to cover $500 in unexpected expenses due to the current economic climate. The burden on households is felt across Europe, with the discrepancy between rich and poor becoming increasingly visible.

Over recent times, people's consumer behavior has changed. Now more than ever, consumers are looking for deals and trying to cover basic needs as cost-effectively as possible. There is an interesting development here: retail sales are reported to have increased to over VND33,500 billion, up 25.1% year-on-year.

What does the future look like? Consumers must prepare for a sustained period of rising prices and therefore ongoing financial challenges. This requires a good hand when shopping and a watchful eye on price developments in order not to get caught in a tailspin. Stay tuned so you don't miss further developments on this important topic!
