Delmenhorst motorway triangle: complete closure in September threatens chaos!
Drivers around Bremen have to prepare for further restrictions. In September, the Delmenhorst motorway triangle will be completely closed in order to install a new bridge. The construction work, which is already moving into the next phase, is necessary for the installation of the delivered steel frame of the new bridge. This measure comes after an interim construction stop at the end of June, which was unavoidable due to delivery delays for special components. The current work focuses on preparing the necessary infrastructure, particularly in the area behind the abutments, which are crucial for the load-bearing capacity of the bridge.
The planned full closure is scheduled for September 12th to 14th. According to [Kreizeitung](https://www.kreiszeitung.de/lokales/niedersachsen/ Werden-besseres-autobahn-dreieck-soll-komplett-gesperrt-93880082.html), coordination with the responsible authorities is ongoing in order to be able to redirect traffic efficiently. Drivers are directed via signposted diversion routes that include the B75 to Syker Straße and back to the B75 to the Annenheider Allee roundabout or alternatively via Syker Straße and Reinersweg.
Background to the lockdown
This measure is part of the significant project to replace an old bridge from 1961, which in 2019 showed significant safety deficiencies. Material failures on prestressing steel were particularly worrying, which made it necessary to demolish the bridge in December 2023. The old damage made quick action essential, and the installation of the new bridge has been significantly delayed since spring 2023 due to suspicions of unexploded bombs from the Second World War. Furthermore, the unexpected soil conditions in the area caused additional difficulties.
The new construction of the bridge was originally scheduled to be completed in April 2024, but completion is now not expected until the fourth quarter of 2023. Currently, the construction progress, the backfilling of the excavation pits and the backfilling behind the abutments, represents a challenge. According to Weser-Kurier, the steel frame of the new bridge has been in place since the beginning of the year prepared on a pre-assembly site.
Additional traffic restrictions
But that's not all: a section of the A1 will soon be completely closed. Longer-term planning and unforeseeable events do not make traveling around Bremen easy for drivers. Cities are asked to find suitable solutions that ensure both safety and mobility.
The aim behind all of these measures is to make the transport infrastructure safer. According to the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, such projects are essential to promote traffic safety and to sustainably repair age-related bridge damage.
