Traffic confusion in Delmenhorst: special meeting on the new high school!

In Delmenhorst, discussions about the location for a third high school are in full swing. A special council meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 23, at 6 p.m. at the com.media event center. This is where a decision should be made as to where the new school should be built. The city leadership originally wanted to repeat the decision from a regular meeting on April 24th. At that time, the choice was in favor of the Iprump location, but the decision was contested by the SPD because there was allegedly no statement from the Traffic Safety Commission. This political debate shows how tense the situation is, with some city staff expressing concerns about the traffic situation around the proposed site.

A recent analysis from a traffic report raises additional questions and reinforces concerns about the Iprump location. According to the Weser Kurier, the evaluation matrices classify the traffic situation as problematic. It could even be that the special meeting on Monday will be canceled altogether if some information is still missing.

Traffic planning and challenges

According to the results of a traffic report that was presented to the city administration and the public, a high school at the Iprump location is fundamentally feasible. However, Mayor Petra Gerlach made it clear that no location is ideal and compromises are necessary. The problem is particularly noticeable at the Bremer Heerstraße/Großer Tannenweg junction and the Heidkrug train station. The footpaths and cycle paths there are far too narrow for the expected number of students. In order to cope with the volume of traffic, comprehensive measures must be taken: These include widening the paths, creating additional crossing fords and setting up a barrier-free bus stop.

The daily traffic flows on Bremer Heerstrasse are already remarkable: between 10,000 and 11,000 cars. In the period before school starts, traffic conditions could be even more tense, which underlines the importance of the upcoming planning. Around 700 students are forecast for the new high school; 70% of them live within a radius of less than four kilometers and are not entitled to a means of transport. Around 150 students will ride the bus in the first hour, which requires a demand for 30 parking spaces and 10 parking spaces for a pick-up and drop-off zone.

Quick decisions are necessary

First city councilor Markus Pragal announced that the administration had recently received the interim results of the traffic report and that another six to eight weeks would be needed for the comprehensive assessment. There is a certain amount of time pressure on the high school as it is scheduled to open in summer 2026. The optimistic outlook is that the school building in Iprump could be completed by mid-2028 at the latest. During the transition period, mobile buildings could be used at the South High School.

The question remains: Will the city manage to overcome all of these challenges? Citizens are encouraged to contact the city administration directly if they have any further questions. The situation remains dynamic and there are still many outstanding issues that need to be clarified.
