62-year-old causes chaos: three police operations in just 90 minutes!
Things got really turbulent in Gifhorn in the late afternoon of October 2nd, 2025. A 62-year-old man caused three police operations in just 90 minutes and pushed the officers to their limits. At 3:15 p.m. the first alarm came from a supermarket on Braunschweiger Straße: a theft was reported and the anti-theft device was activated. The suspect, so reported Picture, was asked to the market office, where not only stolen alcohol was found, but also a blank gun.
The police were called immediately and confiscated the weapon. This resulted in misdemeanor proceedings and criminal proceedings for theft being initiated. The man was also banned from entering the supermarket in the future.
Another incident and expulsion
Just half an hour later, at 4:30 p.m., the first supermarket reported again. The man had returned despite the ban on entering the house. He was discovered in the entrance area while trying to enter the market. As soon as the police arrived, he refused to leave the location, which led to the initiation of a third criminal case for trespassing. The man was taken into custody under police supervision and a judge confirmed this measure.
The downside of shoplifting
The incidents in Gifhorn are not isolated. In 2023, there were around 426,000 shoplifting reports in retail, the highest number since 2006. According to Deutschlandfunk Inflation and falling purchasing power, as well as an increase in professional thieves' gangs, are the main reasons for this increase.
Retailers spent a total of 1.55 billion euros on theft prevention in 2023 alone. Who wouldn't dip into the cash register if the costs ultimately end up with the customer anyway? Popular stolen goods include alcoholic beverages, which also played a role in this case. Awareness of security measures is growing, while inventory losses in retail rose to an impressive 4.8 billion euros in 2023 alone.
The penalties for shoplifting are not negligible: simple theft can be punished with a fine or a prison sentence of up to five years. It remains to be hoped that incidents like those in Gifhorn do not become the norm, because losses due to shoplifting ultimately affect everyone - from retailers to customers.
