New cycle path in the Gifhorn district: safety for cyclists increases!
A sigh of relief for all cyclists in the Gifhorn district: A new cycle path along the K104 between Groß Schwülper and Walle has been inaugurated, significantly increasing not only the safety but also the attractiveness of cycling in the region. The new building improves the cycle path network on the district roads by an impressive 700 meters, which not only makes commuter traffic easier, but also provides welcome relief for the school buses that use the route every day.
With a width of 2.50 meters and a carefully developed area in the curve area, which has been completely renovated over 267 meters, the new cycle path offers more than just a simple connection. The rest of the road has also been upgraded by having 4 centimeters milled off and given a fresh asphalt surface layer. This is all part of the comprehensive measures, which were supplemented by a conversion of the central island to provide a crossing aid at the entrance to the town in order to create a safe transition area for pedestrians and cyclists. The “Bornheider Weg” bus diversion route from Groß Schwülper to Lagesbüttel was also renovated after frequent use by 17 school buses made it clear that there was an increased need for renovation.
Investments in cycling infrastructure
The costs for the new cycle path add up to around 580,000 euros, with an impressive 75% of these expenses being covered by funding from the state of Lower Saxony in accordance with the Lower Saxony Municipal Transport Financing Act (NGVFG). How on Niedersachsen.de can be read, the state supports communities financially in improving their traffic conditions. The aid can amount to up to 75 percent of the costs for important traffic measures.
For communities that are financially weaker, up to 90% funding is available - an incentive to invest in infrastructure and increase mobility. This offer is also used by the Stadt und Land_initiative, which aims to advance municipal cycling infrastructure in Lower Saxony with a total volume of 800 million euros by 2030. The goal is a safe, attractive cycling system that promotes sustainable mobility.
Funding through various programs
The Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport plays a central role in the implementation of these measures. It deals with applications for funding that include both new construction measures and the expansion of existing cycle paths. The ADFC Lower Saxony reports that over 2,250 measures have already been confirmed since the program launched in 2021, underpinning overall efforts to improve cycle paths.
The investments in this new infrastructure are not only a reactive measure, but also a decisive step towards environmental awareness and sustainable mobility. The Gifhorn district will remain an attractive destination for cyclists of all ages in the future.
Overall, it can be seen that there is a strong commitment to cycling infrastructure in the Gifhorn district, which is supported by state and federal funding programs. A strong signal for the future of cycling in the region!
