Payment turnaround in Gifhorn: From December only pay by card!
The Gifhorn district road traffic office is taking the next step towards digitalization and modern service. From mid-December 2025, cash will no longer be accepted there. In the future, payments for registration and driving license matters will only be possible by debit or credit card. The previous cash register system will be replaced by digital payment methods. The integration of new affordable solutions such as Wero and PayPal is also being planned to offer citizens even more convenience. This is reported by the WAZ.
The Gifhorn district has already asked the population to adapt to these new payment methods in good time. “Anyone who wants to deal with their matters in the admissions office should be prepared,” said a spokesman. The existing pay station will be taken out of service at the time of the changeover, which makes switching to modern payment methods even more urgent.
New regulations and services
With the switch to card payments, the processing of registration processes and driving license applications at the road traffic office will become more efficient. In addition, citizens who do not have time for a visit can hire an admission service. It should be noted that commercial vehicle dealers and registration services only use the dealer counter and do not have to book appointments.
Another advantage: If you don't have time for an appointment, you can carry out some procedures without registering at the information desk in advance, including decommissioning, short-term license plates, stickers and replacement license plates. However, it is important that all fees can vary in accordance with the fee schedule for road traffic measures (GebOSt) and that the details should be discussed beforehand. In addition, the STVA portal offers numerous online services that make the registration process much easier.
Challenges and digital solutions
The switch to a cashless system corresponds to the trend in many administrations that want to become more efficient through modern technologies. The Deloitte describes that citizens increasingly expect better and easier access to public services. It is often criticized that services are difficult to access or that insufficient information is provided.
In order to counteract these challenges, it is important that administrations such as the road traffic authority not only adapt payment methods, but also rethink their entire service orientation. Technology-based solutions could help reduce bureaucracy and improve access to law enforcement. This would be a step in the right direction towards a fairer and more inclusive society.
With the impending change, it will be exciting to see how citizens react to the new regulations and whether this will bring the hoped-for boost to a modernized administration. And don't forget: If you want to register or re-register your vehicle, you should keep the new card payment option in mind in good time!
