Göttingen is planning digital change: the library of the future is coming!

The future of the Göttingen City Library is beginning to take shape. A joint application from the council factions of Alliance 90/The Greens, GöLinke, the PARTEI as well as the VOLT council group and councilor Francisco Welter-Schultes brings a breath of fresh air to the library's digital offering. The aim is to set up a digital hub that will offer a modern and open space for technical development. Loud Myregion365 Mayor Onyeka Oshionwu explains that the city library should become a place for all generations where new technologies can be discovered and designed.

The planned DigitalHub is intended to be a treasure trove for creative minds. Offers such as 3D printing, robotics as well as augmented and virtual reality are planned. Technology for producing podcasts and videos is also provided. “We want to ensure low-threshold access that is independent of age, origin or educational background,” emphasizes Oshionwu. The aim is to make the library an inclusive space that promotes digital skills and offers space for innovative ideas.

Digital education rethought

As part of the initiative, the city library and other partners, such as the University of Göttingen and the district media center, are working together on implementation. The first funding opportunities identified by the SüdniedersachsenStiftung are particularly important here. The aim is also to submit a funding application as part of the “Future Region of Southern Lower Saxony”.

A look beyond borders shows how libraries can become places of innovation. International examples from Helsinki and the twin cities of Cheltenham and Toruń prove that this change is possible. Even smaller cities like Hagenow show that a lot can be achieved even with limited resources. Coding for Tomorrow also describes how digitalization is transforming learning and teaching methods and fundamentally changing the role of libraries.

A place for business and creativity

The DigitalHub will not only be a place for community education, but also for companies. Small and medium-sized companies can also develop innovative ideas here and get excited about digital technologies. Various building blocks such as the LearningHub, MakerHub and CommunicationHub are offered that support companies in promoting new products and business models. The focus is particularly on networking science and business in order to provide new impetus in the region. A concept that clearly comes from the network of Göttingen Digital emerges and shows the potential to strengthen the local economy.

It remains exciting to see how the project will develop and what new perspectives will arise for the citizens of Göttingen. With a clear focus on digital education and innovation, the DigitalHub is expected to permanently change the library landscape.
