Göttingen is transforming: Graffiti Walk becomes an open-air gallery!
The city center of Göttingen is transformed into a lively backdrop full of color and creativity: the eagerly awaited Göttingen Graffiti Walk starts on July 4, 2025. This urban art project, which will run over a period of twelve weeks, will ensure that the city becomes an open-air gallery. At the opening event on July 4th and 5th, there will be exciting hands-on activities for citizens on the station forecourt and Jacobikirchhof. This makes it possible not only to marvel at the colorful works of art, but also to actively participate in the art scene - discover art in a new way in everyday life, that's the motto!
The project starts with the design of nine large overseas containers by talented regional artists such as Malte Orth, Dominic Kramer and Agatha Czarny. These containers will be placed at eight prominent locations in the city center, including the train station and the university's central campus. The accompanying program is complemented by music, street food and additional hands-on activities, so that visitors are thoroughly entertained. QR codes on the containers offer exciting insights into the works of art as well as information about the artists and their motives. [ Meineregion365 ](https://meineregion365.de/kultur- Veranstaltung/goettingen-wird-zur-open-air-galerie-3033705) reports that this action is part of a larger initiative that aims to promote dialogue and community in Göttingen.
Artistic diversity and new perspectives
“Diversity, science, culture and student life” – these are just some of the topics covered in this artistic series. The city of Göttingen is not only focusing on aesthetic enrichment, but also on the creative use of public spaces. Mayor Petra Broistedt will be present at the start of the graffiti walk and the symbolic figure, the little mini gosling Ava, will also provide a charming start.
The project is supported by Göttingen Marketing in collaboration with 14 partners from business and society such as Sartorius AG and BG Göttingen, who are working together to strengthen the city center as part of the “Resilient City Center” funding program. This gives the colorful hustle and bustle a long-term positive effect that goes far beyond the works of art. For further information about the event, which will also offer a digital graffiti map and flyers for individual tours, it is worth visiting the Göttingen Tourismus website.
At a time when art in public spaces is becoming increasingly important, Göttingen could live up to its role as a dynamic center for contemporary art with this innovative concept. Similar projects can currently be observed in other cities, such as art-in-building campaigns in Winterthur, which also aim to make public space interactive and appealing. According to City of Winterthur, such approaches are not only important locally, but also promote the exchange and awareness of art in urban environments.
Whether it's voting for the most popular work of art or painting with chalk - there's something for every age group. This will be an exciting time for Göttingen: citizens are warmly invited to rediscover their city through the eyes of the artists and to experience the cultural diversity up close!
