Lower Saxony benefits: Four billion euros for our hospitals!
In a welcome step for healthcare in Germany, hospitals can look forward to a financial boost. How myregion365.de reported, the clinics will receive an additional four billion euros in 2025 and 2026 via the new transformation fund. This decision is the result of intensive negotiations between the federal and state governments as part of an immediate investment program. Lower Saxony in particular benefits from this regulation, as the state's Minister of Health, Dr. Andreas Philippi, emphasized.
Lower Saxony will receive around 400 million euros over the next two years to compensate for rising operating costs. These funds are intended to ensure the financial stability of the hospital landscape. Dr. Philippi thanks Prime Minister Olaf Lies for his support, which made this important relief measure possible. The state government sees high-quality and needs-based inpatient care as the highest priority.
The Transformation Fund – A comprehensive concept
But what exactly is behind the transformation fund? The fund, managed by the Federal Office for Social Security (BAS), aims to modernize hospital structures in Germany by up to 50 billion euros. This is part of the Hospital Care Improvement Act (KHVVG), which was passed on December 5, 2024 and aims to increase the quality of treatment and increase the efficiency of care.
The transformation fund will have a total volume of up to 50 billion euros from 2026 to 2035. Of this, 25 billion euros come from the health fund's liquidity reserve. The applicants, i.e. the federal states, must contribute at least 50 percent of the eligible costs. Funding includes, among other things, projects for improved concentration of inpatient care, the restructuring of locations and the training of new capacities.
New ways of submitting applications and implementing them
Another step forward is the simplification of the application process. In the future, applications for the transformation fund will only be processed digitally via an online portal. This became loud bundesgesundheitsministerium.de introduced with the aim of debureaucratizing the procedure and simplifying administration.
Another important point is that the implementation of funded projects may not begin before July 1, 2025, so that planning can begin before then. These measures are part of a comprehensive approach to ensuring high-quality, comprehensive and efficient medical care across the country.
In summary, it is clear: The transformation fund is an important step in ensuring the performance and quality of the healthcare system in Germany and at the same time mastering the financial challenges. It remains to be seen how these developments will specifically impact patient care in the coming years.
