In the night of Sunday, July 20, 2025, a devastating fire broke out in the historic market church "Zum Holy Spirit" in Clausthal-Zellerfeld. The fire brigade was alerted at 00:40 after the fire alarm system of the church triggered an emergency signal. The fire had spread quickly on the east side of the church, from the ground to the roof overhang. The market church is considered the largest wooden church in Germany and was built in the 17th century.
