Virtual revival: Discover Goslar Cathedral in 3D!

The Goslar Cathedral, an important cultural asset in the region, is now returning digitally to the cityscape. The city of Goslar is using a new app to enable those interested to virtually experience the once-vanished sacred building. Goslar.de reports that this app offers an exciting journey through the history of the cathedral. The official release event will take place on November 15th in the winter hall of the Kaiserpfalz, to which everyone is cordially invited.

The event, which lasts from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offers opportunities to try out the DOM:digital app with VR glasses or your own smartphone. There is another event for children and young people, especially in December, which also promises exciting insights into the digital world of the cathedral. A little tip for anyone interested: Pre-registration is recommended in order to safely participate in the event!

Virtual experiences and historical insights

The DOM:digital app not only reconstructs the Goslar Cathedral itself, but also the collegiate church of St. Simon and Judas. Users have the opportunity to explore the church building in 3D, enter the nave and even visit the reconstructed crypt. A special highlight for young explorers is an interactive escape game, where the church bat Lunar takes the kids on playful discovery tours. The aim of the app is to make the historical significance of the cathedral as a place of remembrance impressive and tangible.

The cathedral, built in 1051 under Emperor Henry III. consecrated, was not only a place of worship, but also a central place of imperial representation. The app also allows users to immerse themselves in a virtual journey back in time to the year 1426 and experience a recreated relic display. Here it becomes clear how central the veneration of the relics of Henry III is. for the city's self-image until the late Middle Ages.

A project with commitment

The idea for digitally conveying history was initiated by Marleen Mützlaff in 2020 and developed by Dr. Jan Habermann helped shape it as scientific director. The development of the app is based on intensive workshops in which citizens were also involved in the concept work. These workshops took place in the cultural marketplace from October to December 2023 and gave the population the opportunity to actively participate.

The technical and content-related implementation of the project was supported by EXCIT3D GmbH from Solingen, which is known for offering innovative solutions in the area of digital media. With this offer, the city is not only pursuing the reconstruction of an important historical site, but also wants to make the city center sustainable and invite visitors into the history of their city.
