The fatal attack on 26-year-old Algerian Rahma A. in Hanover raises questions about femicide and racism.

Horrific femicide in Hanover: 26-year-old murdered!
A tragedy occurred on July 4th in Arnum, south of Hanover, which caused deep horror in the community. 26-year-old Rahma A., an Algerian woman, was stabbed to death in the stairwell of her home. The alleged perpetrator, a 31-year-old German named Alexander K., is now in custody and has admitted the crime, while the public prosecutor's investigation into possible motives is still ongoing. The circumstances are alarming because, according to nd aktuell, a racist motive cannot be ruled out.
According to reports, the perpetrator, who had no criminal record, had previously tried to gain entry to Rahma's apartment and insulted her because of her hijab and her origins. This was also confirmed by residents who also heard Rahma's cries for help. Sadly, she died at the scene after suffering multiple stab wounds, including a stab to the heart, a post mortem confirmed. Rahma had been living in Germany for two years, working in a hospital in Hanover and aiming to train as a nurse.
Rise of vigils and protests
In the days after the crime, over 100 people gathered in Hanover and Arnum for vigils organized by the Network Against Femicides. Staff at the KRH Siloah Clinic, where Rahma worked, were devastated by the loss and collected donations for her family. Prayers were also held for Rahma A. in a mosque, a sign of compassion in her community. The Algerian ambassador attended the prayer ceremony, while the Algerian State Secretary for Citizens Living Abroad called the act a “heinous crime” and called for better protection.
Rahma's mother reported on the constant anti-Muslim and racist hostility that her daughter had to endure at the hands of Alexander K. This raises questions about social structures and the recurring femicides, which are still a burning problem in Germany and many other countries. According to taz, the “Stop Femicides” initiative had already counted 51 cases in Germany by the beginning of July 2025.
Femicide: A problem for society as a whole
The term “femicide” describes the killing of a woman because of her gender and is often motivated by hierarchical gender relations. The dimension of violence against women is complex and manifests itself in various forms, such as physical and psychological violence. According to the BKA, 155 women in Germany were killed by their (ex-)partner in 2023. The Federal Agency for Civic Education points out that there is no uniform definition of femicide, which makes the legal prosecution of such acts difficult.
The shocking act of Rahma A. shows the urgent need for preventive measures and a broader social discussion about violence against women. In the period from 2022 to 2023 alone, the numbers increased dramatically, and it is time for both individuals and institutions to address this issue.
The Algerian embassy has already ordered the transfer of Rahma's body to Oran for her burial. After all, one can only hope that the tragic case of Rahma A. will serve as an impetus for profound changes in society.
