At a time when transport safety is more of a concern than ever, the incident at Hamburg-Harburg train station highlights the ongoing challenges travelers face every day. In 2023 there was a decrease of 5% to 8,874 injured people, with the number of injured children in particular falling by an impressive 18.8% to 362. But despite these positive developments, there were also downsides: the number of fatal traffic accidents rose to 39, from 28 in the previous year. The victims included 14 pedestrians, 10 cyclists and several drivers. What remains alarming is that over 50% of these fatal accidents were caused by the behavior of the victims themselves. It is particularly worth mentioning here that in 2020 Hamburg equipped heavy commercial vehicles with turning assistance systems in order to specifically reduce the risks.
The figures from recent years show a decline in accidents, while traffic volumes have increased again after the corona pandemic. There were 61,017 traffic accidents in 2022, a decrease of 11.5% since 2019. Both the number of traffic fatalities and the number of children involved in accidents have fallen. With 407 children having accidents in 2022, around 4% fewer than in 2019, one can hope that road safety is still on the rise. This is shown by the Hamburg Police.
In addition, citizens are encouraged by the road safety campaign “Hamburg is careful!” informed about how they can better protect themselves in dangerous situations. This initiative will continue in 2025. The police rely on speed monitoring and prevention work to further reduce not only the number of accidents but also the number of injuries.
