The focus of urban development is the World Heritage-compatible upgrading of the surroundings of St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Michaelis, in particular the connection to the city center. Art and architecture in Hildesheim
The St. Michael's Church and the St. Mary's Cathedral are not only known for their historical significance, but also impress with their unique architecture. Despite the destruction during the Second World War, the heart of St. Michael's Church, the wooden ceiling from the 13th century, remains in its authentic condition. This special blanket, which was stored during the war, is unique in the world. The churches are located on a hill so that the surrounding buildings do not block their view, and the medieval town plan has been relatively well preserved to this day. You can find out more about this on the website UNESCO.
The Hildesheim sites are an excellent example of the art and architecture of the Holy Roman Empire and also offer insights that go far beyond what other Romanesque churches in the Christian West can provide. In this way, World Heritage enables a better understanding of medieval architecture, which had a decisive influence on development.
