Stolen and found: Organ pipes from Sorsum are being investigated by the police!

The bizarre story of the stolen organ pipes recently caused a stir in Lower Saxony. In mid-June 2025, an unknown person broke into a former church in the Sorsum district, the site of the Diakonie Himmelsthür. There he not only left behind a monumental organ, but also stole all the pipes, which were up to 2.4 meters long. This can be found from a report by NDR.

The perpetrators gained access to the church through a window and caused damage, including to the toilet facilities and sinks. The police received a report of the break-in on June 13, 2025 and immediately began investigating. The destruction of the church and its facilities was found to be very unfortunate by various locals.

A recycling center as a turning point

However, the story took an unexpected turn when a recycling company in Hildesheim informed the police that they had received delivered organ pipes. During further investigations, these were identified as stolen goods and were subsequently confiscated. In the end, the pipes received a new purpose when they were returned to the Diakonie, like District newspaper reported.

A 32-year-old man from Hildesheim is now suspected of being the thief who committed the thefts. However, the exact circumstances are still unclear and the police are keeping a low profile on the matter. Nevertheless, the crime concerned the community and raised awareness of the theft of sacred objects.

A widespread problem

A further look at current statistics shows that theft of antiques, art and sacred objects in Germany increased sharply between 2014 and 2024, as the Federal Criminal Police Office revealed in a recently published study. According to an evaluation Statista This type of crime is becoming increasingly popular among criminals.

Despite the repatriation of the organ pipes, the question of the safety and protection of such valuable cultural assets in the community remains. The fates that take place within the walls of these churches are not just stories, but also a reflection of society, which needs to know how to preserve its values. The investigation and prevention of such incidents will have to play an important role in the future.
