Volunteering in focus: Conference on strengthening in Lüneburg on October 28th!

Volunteering plays a central role in the lives of the general population, be it in the fire department, in sports clubs or in aid organizations such as the Red Cross. But the demands on committed people are constantly increasing, which is particularly important given climate change and new threats. For this reason, the district SPD is inviting you to an important event on Tuesday, October 28th at 7 p.m Volunteer conference into the Lüneburg Museum.

High-profile guests such as Interior Minister Daniela Behrens and MP Philipp Meyn are expected at this event to work together with regional experts on concrete measures to strengthen volunteerism in the Lüneburg district. In particular, representatives of large associations, such as the MTV Treubund Lüneburg, as well as village associations and experts from various rescue organizations - including the ASB and the DLRG - should be actively involved in the exchange.

The importance of volunteering

Voluntary work is not only a cornerstone of society, but also of democracy. Meyn emphasizes the importance of engagement in forming a vibrant community. Working groups that deal with the topics of sport and disaster control are intended to further improve voluntary work.

Participation in the conference is free and open to all interested parties. To ensure that everything goes smoothly, we recommend registering online via the SPD website.

Additional initiatives and training

But this is not the only measure to support volunteer work in Lüneburg. The second network meeting of the Engaged City of Lüneburg took place at Leuphana University in May 2025, where around 90 initiatives, clubs and associations discussed topics such as funding, public relations and diversity in volunteer work. Online training on funding acquisition was also offered, which is intended to help the initiatives successfully finance their projects. Such exchange and cooperation are central to further expanding civil society engagement, as is the case Hanseatic city of Lüneburg plans.

Volunteering has a long tradition in Germany that goes back to ancient times. Whether they are volunteer board members in clubs, election workers or members of volunteer fire departments – their services are indispensable for public and social life. According to estimates, between 15.98 million and over 23 million people across the country are involved in various forms of voluntary work.

A current look at voluntary work not only shows the social value, but also raises questions about relieving the state of social tasks. This diversity illustrates how essential voluntary work is for social cohesion and at the same time contributes to the personal development of those involved. A Volunteering is therefore not just a question of commitment, but also an opportunity for many to further develop their skills and competencies and to actively contribute to shaping their community.

In a world in which commitment is increasingly required, it is to be hoped that the upcoming events and initiatives will support these efforts and create new paths for the future of volunteer work in Lüneburg.
