Ilmenau in focus: Start online survey on natural use!

In the district of Lüneburg there is a breath of fresh air in the nature conservation -friendly use of Ilmenau. The population is now invited to actively participate in the design of the future of the river. The district has launched an online survey that runs until August 29, 2025. The aim of the survey is to capture the wishes and expectations of the citizens: inside the natural use of Ilmenau. Participation takes around five minutes. The survey is part of the “Integrated Water Tourist Concept for the Ilmenau River” project, which was launched on June 13, 2025. As part of this project, the district of Lüneburg plans to bring leisure activities such as canoeing, stand-up paddling and Baden in line with the nature protection requirements. The Ilmenau, which meanders over about 90 kilometers and rises south of Uelzen, is surrounded by nature reserves in many places, which requires careful planning. A funding notice of 48,000 euros from the European Fund for Regional Development (ERDRE) was on the same day by Dr. Birgit Nolte presented to Janna Hoveida to support this project.

: Invitation to the information event

For everyone who wants to deal more intensively with the plans, the district organizes an information event on July 2, 2025. This takes place at 6 p.m. in the meeting room of the Ilmenau velvet community in Melbeck. Clubs, organizations and companies are invited to be interested in the development of the river. Registration for the event is required until June 30, 2025, either by phone at 04131 26-1296 or by email to kreiskl.

The future steps of the project initially include the development of a strategic concept until April 2026. This is followed by the concrete implementation with investment measures, also funded from the program "Future regions in Lower Saxony". The overall program has a budget of around 6 million euros, which is intended for the areas of "culture and leisure" as well as the "biological diversity and functioning natural spaces". The districts of Lüneburg, Uelzen and Harburg as well as relevant actors work hand in hand to ensure sustainable and future -proof design of the river.

The district of Lüneburg takes a central step towards ecological responsibility and sustainable leisure activities with this project. The challenge of combining nature conservation and leisure fun is great, but with the right concept in the heart of the heart of Northern Germany you want to protect the Ilmenau natural area and at the same time offer citizens: inside offers for active and relaxing leisure fun. The local recreation area should therefore be excellently set up for the future.
