Lüneburg's CDU: Security instead of symbolic politics - citizens must be protected!

In Lüneburg the discussion about security and cityscape is becoming increasingly louder. Today, on October 26, 2025, the CDU Lüneburg sharply criticizes the left-wing opposition for their unwillingness to face the pressing questions about the security situation in German cities. The chairman of the CDU city association, Heiko Eggers, noted that many citizens feel a seriously reduced sense of security and that it is high time to address the population's fears. “Security is not a luxury, but a basic need,” said Eggers in a statement on Lüneburg Aktuell.

The CDU particularly points to the increasing challenges arising from violence, organized crime, drug trafficking and harassment in public spaces. Citizens' fears must be taken seriously. Eggers emphasized that safety goes far beyond the mere absence of danger. In political science, security is understood not only as a state of freedom from danger, but also as a complex concept that includes both internal and external security. These aspects are fundamental to the understanding of community and society, as described on Wikipedia: Security is “the state that is free from unacceptable risks” and includes political and social components.

Security situation and political responsibility

The CDU also referred to the statements made by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who clearly advocated a rethink in the security debate. One can probably say that the CDU's demands must go far beyond symbolic political measures. Many people's living conditions are affected by a sense of security, or rather the lack of it.

“The SPD should be ashamed of taking part in demonstrations against the black-red federal government instead of dealing with the real problems of the citizens,” Eggers continued to complain. This criticism is causing quite a stir because many see the SPD as a potential contributor to the current security debates, which have gained momentum in the last few months.

Public safety: A complex issue

Security is indeed a complex matter. There is objective security and subjective security: While objective security includes the actual absence of threats, perceived security also plays a large role, which is often influenced by public discussions and political debates. The concept of security has grown historically and is subject to constant change, influenced by people's individual and collective experiences.

A serious discussion about the security situation is absolutely necessary in Lüneburg. The CDU calls on all political actors to recognize developments in society, to name them honestly and to find sustainable solutions together. This is the only way to regain the population's sense of security - because, as the saying goes, "anyone who ignores the security situation is digging their own grave."
