Road renovation in Lüneburg: Zeppelinstrasse will be renovated from June 23rd!
From June 23rd, the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg will take a closer look at Zeppelinstrasse in the Hafen industrial area. This is being done as part of a comprehensive renovation program designed to address the pressing problems of the dilapidated infrastructure. The condition of Zeppelinstrasse is anything but pleasing: potholes and a dilapidated roadway make it necessary to renew the section at the junction with Lilienthalstrasse. The road will be completely closed for the duration of the construction work, which is expected to take two weeks, as Lüneburgaktuell reports.
In order not to disrupt the flow of traffic during this work, diversion signs will be set up in coordination with the local companies. Passengers who rely on bus lines 5100 and 5120 will not be able to get to the Gebrüder-Heyn-Straße, Von-Stern-Straße and Lilienthalstraße stops during the construction period. Here it is advisable to take bus line 5010, which also stops at Hagen Wendeplatz.
Master plan catches up on renovation backlog
The construction project on Zeppelinstrasse is just one of many planned as part of the new master plan for street renovation. According to the Lüne blog, this 5-year plan was presented in May 2024 and envisages the renewal of the most affected road sections. Dahlenburger Landstrasse, Bleckeder Landstrasse, Bessemerstrasse and Deutsch-Evern-Weg are particularly affected. This is particularly important in order to address the urgent need for action due to the damage caused by the extreme winter and the extensive rainfall. Uta Hesebeck, head of the civil engineering department, emphasizes how much the potholes and water damage have affected the substructure of many roads.
Mayor Claudia Kalisch pointed out that the winter only exacerbated the existing problems and created a backlog of renovations that now needs to be addressed. As part of the master plan, the renovation work will be prioritized on main roads, diversion routes and public transport, which should ensure not only car traffic but also the mobility of citizens.
Costs and funding
The costs for the renovation of Zeppelinstrasse amount to around 125,000 euros. In total, around 1.5 million euros are earmarked for eliminating the renovation backlog in 2024, and the phased planning for 2025 to 2028 envisages a total volume of around 10.8 million euros for various types of roads. What is particularly pleasing is that funding has already been obtained for many of the upcoming works in order to minimize the city's own contribution and to finance the renovation projects.
Citizens can be excited to see what will happen in Lüneburg in terms of road renovation in the coming years. The master plan promises a holistic response to the challenges posed by the infrastructure.
