Bundeswehr uses new super aircraft P-8A Poseidon in Nordholz!
On November 9, 2025, the new P-8A Poseidon submarine hunter and maritime patrol aircraft landed at Nordholz Air Base. This aircraft represents the Bundeswehr's largest combat aircraft and will significantly improve the German armed forces' surveillance and submarine hunting capabilities. NDR reported that the landing took place at around 3:30 p.m. after the plane had previously had to make a stopover at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport. The Federal Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius was on site to receive the innovative aircraft.
According to Rear Admiral Jens Nemeyer, the P-8A Poseidon can be used specifically against Russian submarines in the Atlantic. Germany plans to procure a total of eight of these advanced machines, which will be gradually delivered by Boeing by 2028. The P-8A Poseidon is based on the Boeing 737-800 model and replaces the P-3C Orion, which has now reached the end of its useful life.
Technical details
With impressive technical data, the P-8A Poseidon will be an indispensable instrument in the Bundeswehr's aviation. Here are some key details:
| feature | Details |
|---|---|
| length | 39.5 meters |
| Spanish | 37.7 meters |
| Height | 12.83 meters |
| drive | Two CFM 56-7 turbofan engines |
| speed | 490 knots (936 km/h) |
| reach | more than 7,000 kilometers |
| crew | 3 pilots, 2 tactical coordinators, 6 sensor operators |
| Armament | Lightweight torpedoes, depth charges, air-to-surface guided missiles |
Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, including acoustic processing and high-resolution cameras, the P-8A is designed not only for anti-submarine warfare, but also for combating maritime targets with guided missiles. The machine will also be able to carry out SAR operations and search and rescue people in need in maritime and overland areas. These versatile application options make the P-8A a valuable addition to the Bundeswehr, which has already carried out initial training for crews in partner countries.
Location and future
Nordholz Air Base, where the P-8A is now stationed, functions as a NATO reconnaissance base and will be the base for the operational use of the new aircraft. Future maintenance and technical support services will be provided by industry. The P-8A Poseidon is considered an interim solution until the Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS) enters service in 2035.
The Bundeswehr is facing an exciting chapter in aviation history. The P-8A Poseidon will not only strengthen Germany's defense capability, but also contribute to security in European waters. E-SUT adds that comprehensive quality assurance and acceptance of the aircraft will take place in November before it is fully handed over to the naval aviation.
